SUMMER MEALS FOR KIDS
-
According to a recent study done by No Kid Hungry, 50% of low-income families report spending $300 more per month on groceries during the summer. But there is hope for families struggling to put enough food on the table. The USDA – which runs NSLP – also sponsors the Summer Food Program. There are many sites serving free meals around Mendocino County to kids as well as adults. There are no forms to fill out or income requirements, any child up to 18 years old can come.

COMMUNITY GARDENS AND GARDENING
-
There’s nothing better than cooking fresh fruit and vegetables right out of your own garden. Whether they’re from your own backyard or a community garden plot, homegrown tomatoes will beat store bought any day of the week.
Gardening Resources
Noyo Food Forest - The Noyo Food Forest cultivates a healthy local food system by providing opportunities for education, social enterprise, and community involvement. www.noyofoodforest.org
UC Master Gardeners – Master Gardeners are people of all ages and from all walks of life. They include business men and women, professionals, educators, retirees, homemakers, and students -- all with some experience and knowledge of plants and gardening. Master Gardeners are enthusiastic and love to help other gardeners in the community. http://cemendocino.ucanr.edu/Master_Gardener578/Community Gardens
The Gardens Project - You can grow your own food! There are many community gardens in Mendocino County that are available for anyone to join. These gardens, if already at full capacity, have waiting lists for new gardeners to join. If you don’t find an available garden plot at first, it’s likely there will be an opening within a few months. Is there NOT a community garden near you? Talk to your neighbors, look for some free land nearby, and talk to the Gardens Project to see about starting a new community garden in your neighborhood! Team Sports
Youth sports teach healthy habits that kids will carry with them into adulthood. Playing together as a team teaches children to work together to achieve common goals, and having to learn and practice to become a better player teaches self-discipline. The life-long friendships and self-esteem that kids get from spending time on a ball field or in a gymnasium are valuable rewards that will serve them well for many years. Adults benefit from playing together on a team as well. It’s an opportunity to de-stress, socialize, engage in friendly competition.
